Description of the job
- Asbestos decontamination of metallic structures
- Partial demolition and reconstruction of the false ceiling
- Re-insulation with fire protection
- • This was the first and the largest remediation intervention carried out in Italy on a civil building, which was kept habitable for the whole duration of the works.
Test phase
- Between 1987 and 1989, the first decontamination was carried out on two floors, where the managers' offices were. This experience was essential to create a complex working plan for the remediation of the whole building. We can call this a pilot intervention, as we had to tackle all the main problems posed by the remediation of a working environment which is only partially empty.
Difficulties faced
- The decontamination was carried out on one floor at a time, with filter floors above and below for refurbishment interventions only.
Critical points
- The building hosting Ente Poste and Telecom offices kept being used for all the duration of the works. Another building was built to temporarily host the offices from the floors being decontaminated.
Innovative solutions adopted
- This was the first intervention where a 200 m2 large prefabricated decontamination unit was used.

Description of the job
Asbestos decontamination of the Descartes tower in Paris
139 metre-high Descartes tower is the 23rd highest building in Paris; but, in terms of surface covered, it is one of the largest buildings of the city. It was built in 1988 and hosted the IBM headquarters for years. It is currently 66% owned by Icade company, which decided to refurbish it.
The remediation works started in May 2010 and are scheduled to finish by September 2011.
The remediation intervention covers 41 floors; because of the scope of these works and the short time available, a group of 3 companies, including TIA, was entrusted with this task. The asbestos used to be widely present as fire protection on walls, ceilings and beams and it has to be fully removed in complete safety.
These labour-intensive works require a high level of organisation within the worksite.
Description of the job
- Characterisation Plan of the site
- Final remediation project
This area is included in the National Plan of Contaminated Sites, as asbestos-polluted topsoil, soil and subsoil. Upon approval by the Ministry of the Environment and Territory, we carried out 54 corings and over 400 analyses to find asbestos and other pollutants - metals in particular - in different soil layers. After Arpa approved the results we obtained, the final remediation plan was drawn up.
